Garbage Collection Guidelines

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. How is my trash collection changing?

A. Trash collection will no longer be unlimited. All trash MUST fit inside the 90-gallon garbage cart with the lid closed. Any trash or building material outside the cart must be scheduled for an extra pickup at a charge of $11.00 per cubic yard even if it is one bag. In addition, bulk items will be limited to 2.

Q. Can I put anything I want inside the 90-gallon cart?

A. Household trash and building materials are acceptable as long as it fits inside the cart and is not too heavy. Hazardous materials are not allowed.

Q. What happens if my cart is overweight?

A. If the driver is unable to lift the cart without damaging it, it will be left. You will have to lighten it up for your next service day. If the driver has to return on the same day there will be a $15.00 trip fee charged.

Q. I have a big family and one 90-gallon cart is not enough. What else can I do?

A. Extra carts can be obtained by going to City Hall and purchasing a sticker for $156.00. The sticker is good for one year and the cost will be prorated at $3.00 per week. Purchased stickers will then be placed on the extra 90-gallon cart delivered by Veolia. Each year the sticker color will change so a new sticker will have to be purchased yearly. For more information, call the City Collector’s Office @ (847) 360-0334.

Q. I currently do not have a 90-gallon cart. What can I do until I get one delivered?

A. Three 32-gallon cans may be used on a temporary basis only. Once the 90-gallon cart is delivered you cannot use the 32-gallon cans. Veolia will not replace any damaged 32-gallon cans.

Q. What happens if my 90-gallon cart(s) are missing or stolen?

A. Veolia will not replace them. The resident will have to purchase a replacement cart. The cost of replacement is $60.00 per cart.

Q. If my 90-gallon cart is broken will it be replaced?

A. Yes. But if the cart is damaged due to overloading it will not be replaced. You will have to purchase a replacement cart. The cost of replacement is $60.00 per cart.

Q. How many bulk (furniture) items can I put out on my service day?

A. You will be limited to two items less than 50 lbs. each. If one item is over 50 lbs. it must be broken down and manageable for driver to lift. Items over 50 lbs. that require two trash men to lift will be charged extra. Example items: console and large screen TV’s.

Q. One recycle bin is not enough for my family. What can I do?

A. Recycle bins are now obtained from Waukegan Public Works. You cannot purchase extra bins or get replacements from Veolia. Extra recycle materials can be placed in paper bags outside the bin. DO NOT place in plastic bags or recycle plastic bags. Bins with plastic bags will not be emptied. To obtain an extra recycle bin, please call Waukegan Public Works @ (847) 360-0944.

HOW DO I ARRANGE FOR SCAVENGER SERVICE?

The City of Waukegan contracts scavenger services with a private disposal company. Under the current terms of the contract, the Contractor (Veolia) agrees to collect all residential garbage, yardwaste and recyclables once per week. Several bulk items such as furniture and carpeting may be placed next to the standard trash cart at the curb for regular weekly pick-up. The containers should be located within ten feet of the curb or alley. Refuse should be placed at the curb no earlier than 5:00 pm the night preceding collection. All collection cans must be removed from the curb by 6:00 pm the evening of collection.

Excessive bulk items and building materials require special collection and will not be part of normal weekly collection. Residents may contact Veolia at (847) 623-3870 to arrange for a special pick up.

White goods such as refrigerators, stoves, water heaters, dishwashers, air conditioners and other similar appliances will be picked up on Wednesday only. Residents are encouraged to call Veolia at (847) 623-3870 if they have these types of items.
